We were not citizens, we would have mattered to her very little, and would have be so easy to ignore. ![]() The senator that helped that day was Dianne Feinstein, and quite frankly, she didn't have to help. All this took over 2 months, and when she got back, she was so disgusted with the US, she told me she was leaving the country, something she did shortly there after, but that's another story. And sure enough, the consulate didn't have one, so they contacted my wife to submit her passport for stamping. In trying to figure out the next steps, I contacted my senator, because I had heard that when the senator's office asks the consulate, they have to answer within 24 hours, with a reason. The one year my wife went to India, and stood in front of the officer, he rejected her summarily - officers don't need to give a reason, and they don't care that you have a job, and a house, and everything in the US. Sounds trivial, but it's probably the most stressful part of the H1B visa, because you have to plan your vacation around your visa appointment date (often several months into the future), and hope that the officer there is having a good day. When you are on a H1B visa in the US, you need to visit the US Consulate in your home country every time the visa renews, so you can get the visa stamped. I hope anyway.ĭo any of you folks have an odd year end custom to share? The department has since been reorganized into something completely different, and probably has far more efficient systems in place now. Looking back, the whole thing was set up to be so wasteful. They’d ship the real item shortly after, but not within the calendar year. So, if a vendor couldn’t fulfill those order, they were asked to ship empty boxes to show that we got something for the order. This place also had a weird accounting rule that said all items purchased in a year had to show up that year. I thought it was crazy then, and now, I am even more opinionated about it. As a result, there’d be this comical practice of a few people taking a PO sheet to the company store on the last day of the year and buying up random stuff, mostly unrelated to work. Spend all the money or else… Every year, a budget was allocated to the department, and if you didn’t spend it, your future budget would at best be the amount you spent, instead of the amount you thought you needed. I once worked at a place that had a bizarre year end custom. As the year end approaches, I thought I’d share a story from my career.
